I decided that I should start off my first blog in a semi-non-cliche way. My first instinct was to write about who I am, what I like to do, but who wants to read that? I wouldn't. Plus, I'm assuming that most people who will be reading this already know those boring details about me. So instead, I thought I'd write about the one thing that keeps me mostly sane: music.
Today, I went on a music buying frenzy. In the last week, I was searching through my iPod trying to find something to listen to, but finding that I didn't want to listen to anything that was on there. I was just bored with all of it. I fixed that this afternoon. I'm pretty sure that anyone who was browsing through my iPod would be a little confused about my music tastes because they are so vast. I tend to like almost every genre, with the exception of screamo. Other than that, I just look for music that makes me smile. Sounds lame, but it's the best way to know if you have really found a good song/artist. I happened to be searching through the singer/songwriter category of the itunes store and stumbled upon my new obsession: Peter Bradley Adams.
The two songs I am most drawn to are The Longer I Run and Los Angeles. I heard The Longer I Run first. I was instantly smiling. The combination of vocals, piano, and guitar completely captivated me.
If I wander till I die, may I know whose hand I'm in.
If my home I'll never find
And let me live again.
The longer I run, then the less that I find selling my soul for a nickel and dime breakin my heart to keep singing these rhymes and losing again.
Those are the lyrics for the bridge and chorus of The Longer I Run. Now try and tell me they aren't amazing. You probably would need to hear it to get the complete effect, but I'm going to leave that one up to you.
Oh Los Angeles we leave you now
At the setting of your skies
As we leave the comfort of your ground
With your angels we will fly
Well you carried us in broken dreams
Like a mother does her sons
We were scattered 'cross your dirty streets
We were dying one by one
And you held us in your city lights
When our eyes had lost the stars

And we made our peace with lonely nights
And you healed our broken hearts
Well they say the Big One's gonna come
And you will fall into the sea
We will know that then your work is done
And your angels will go free
I felt the need to put all of the lyrics to Los Angeles because of how ingenious they are. Now just imagine Peter's voice with a piano playing as the lead instrument with light guitar providing the rhythm in the background. This one moved me. Immensely.
These types of songs make me continue to believe that music reaches right down into people's souls. Whether it be classical, country, R&B, rap, pop, musical theater, or whatever else you are drawn to, music is the ultimate escape.
